LM Montgomery (Maud, to her friends) is best known as the creator of Anne of Green Gables. Though she died in 1942, her legacy lives on around the world through the Anne franchise, most recently Anne with an E.
Maud wrote 20 novels, over 500 short stories, and countless poems. Her works have been translated world-wide and she has been lauded by the likes of Mark Twain, Mindy Kaling and even had her own Google Doodle!
But Maud was so much more than her work. After her mother’s death, Maud was raised by strict grandparents, her imagination her only refuge. With determination and a typewriter missing a W, Maud made a career for herself, and fought for the rights of authors, winning an 8 year copyright battle that took her all the way to the Supreme Court.
Despite her fame, Maud’s small town roots were calling, and she settled into a double-life as a world famous author, minister’s wife, and mother battling mental illness and addiction. Maud's story is as relevant today as it was 80 years ago.
